  2. member of Parliament from 1966 (for Henley
  3. from 1974), and secretary of state for the
  4. environment from 1990. He was minister of the
  5. Environment 1979- 83, when he succeeded John
  6. Nott as minister of Defence Jan 1983 but
  7. resigned Jan 1986 over the Westland affair
  8. and was then seen as a major rival to
  9. Margaret Thatcher. In Nov 1990, Heseltine's
  10. challenge to Thatcher's leadership of the
  11. Conservative Party brought about her
  12. resignation, though he lost the leadership
  13. election to John Major.
